Twilio Celebrates: Three Years of Telephony in the Hands of the People

Members of the Twilio community, including many of our long-time customers, gathered with employees to celebrate the birth of the Twilio API. It was an evening to catch up with friends and
colleagues, and a celebration of how much we’ve all grown in the past three years.

Three years ago on November 20th, the Twilio API launched into the world, with a Rick Roll, and the intention of unlocking the black box of telecommunications. We didn’t want to just open that box, we wanted shake out its dirty insides and make it totally accessible to all levels of developers. With an easy-to-use platform, developers could build and experiment without the hassle or confusion around carriers and tough API.

Twilio Voice was just the beginning, and over the past three years we’ve released new capabilities and multiple products like Twilio SMS, Client, Connect, Shortcodes, Open VBX, and Conferencing. Not to mention reduced pricing, hosted our inaugural Twilio Conference and expanded our capabilities to users around the globe. This past October with the launch of UK Voice and open beta for France, Poland, Austria, Denmark and Portugal, we jumped across the pond and opened an office in London. With now nearly 75,000 developers world-wide, we want to be on the ground where new Twilio communities are growing.

If you weren’t able to join us this time around we look forward to meeting you at the next party, conference, or if you’re ever in the neighborhood. If you were able to join, find yourself on our Facebook page and tag your friends! Or if you’d like the full resolution of fun, see the album on Flickr.

It was a blast celebrating our birth but it’s even more exciting to look forward at what’s coming next – like drawing f**cking owls all over the world.
