Regarding your problem with RSS fetching, you should just use the same user_agent as a regular browser, and retrieve the content using cURL…

Maybe the RSS feed just doesn’t have any items when everything is working fine? NewsGator probably had an old copy of the RSS, or at least an old RSS entry.
