FAQ

General

What can I build with Twilio?

Twilio provides web-service APIs enabling businesses to build scalable, reliable communications applications that make and receive phone calls and text messages (SMS). Thousands of businesses, from sole proprietor to Fortune 500, use Twilio to integrate cloud communications into their processes and products in diverse industries such a healthcare, education, customer service, retail, and manufacturing. Take a look at some of our HowTo guides and winners of previous Twilio application contests for examples.

What can't I build with Twilio?

There's only one application we ask you not to build: unsolicited, commercial calls and messages. AKA, spam. To learn more, please read our Acceptable Use Policy.

I'm not a developer, what can I do with Twilio?

Twilio's APIs are tools for web developers to build cloud communications applications using voice and SMS. If you don't have easy access to web development resources, we recommend posting a job request on our forums, posting a message to the Twilio Developers Network on LinkedIn, or contacting us directly and we'll happily connect you with members of the Twilio developer community who are available for hire.

If you'd like to learn more about cloud communications, and how you can use Twilio to streamline and/or cloud communications enable your business processes, please contact our sales team.

Aren't there already tools for building voice and SMS applications?

Yes. However, these tools usually require up front investment in software or hardware, or have steep learning curves to get up and running. Twilio is designed to simplify all of this, so using only your web development skills, you can build rich, reliable cloud communications enabled applications.

Billing

How much does Twilio cost?

Twilio's simple, pay-as-you-go pricing makes it easy for you to know what you're paying. We charge a per minute rate for calls, a per message rate for text messages, and a small monthly amount for each phone number assigned to you. Twilio also has a free trial with a sandbox phone number and $30 in Twilio credit to help you get started. Click here to see our pricing details.

How does Twilio's free trial work?

You get $30 in Twilio credit that you can use to purchase minutes and SMS messages to build and test your applications. Your trial account can also be used to test speech-to-text transcription and other services. To try your application, dial the Sandbox phone number, and enter a PIN that's unique to your account. While you're in a free trial, there is a short Twilio branded message at the beginning of your calls, calls are limited to a maximum duration of 10 minutes, you can't make international phone calls, purchase phone numbers, or validate Caller IDs outside of the US and Canada.

How to I upgrade to a paid account?

To upgrade, please provide your credit card information and fund your account with a minimum of $20. We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards, and we require that you have a US or Canadian billing address to upgrade a Twilio account.

How am I billed for Twilio?

As you use Twilio services (minutes, phone numbers, transcriptions, etc.) we draw down your account balance, and when your balance reaches $10 you will be notified by email that it is time to recharge. When your account reaches $0, it will be disabled.

How do I set up my Twilio account to automatically recharge my balance?

Click the Auto Recharge button on the Billing and Payment page in your Twilio account. You can configure Twilio to automatically charge your credit card and recharge your account when your balance falls below a threshold you specify.

Isn't everything on the Internet supposed to be free? Why isn't Twilio free?

Twilio is a serious piece of infrastructure with customers relying on us to provide rock solid, reliable communications service to power mission critical business operations. Doing so costs money, and we think you'd rather pay for reliable service than to wonder if we're going to be in business next year.

How do you round minutes for billing?

We round all calls up the nearest minute for the purposes of billing.

How do I cancel my account?

If you're on a free trial, then you don't have to do anything! If you've upgraded by funding your pre-paid account, just let your account balance reach zero. We'll shut off your account automatically when it runs out.

Programming

What language can I use to write a voice application using Twilio?

Any stack of web software works, as long as it can receive an HTTP request and respond with valid XML. We have Helper Libraries to wrap common tasks for several languages.

How do I use feature X?

Our extensive documentation, quickstarts, and HowTos should help you figure things out. Still stumped? Try posting to the forum or contacting us directly. We're happy to help.
