Can I use my Twilio number for SMS?

Sending SMS Messages

Yes, if your phone number is SMS-enabled, you can use it to send SMS messages. In addition to United States and Canada, Twilio also provides Beta mobile phone numbers in several European countries including the Australia, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK. You can send SMS messages from any of these numbers within the country and internationally.

The SMS-enabled phone numbers in Hong Kong, Lithuania, Spain, and the United Kingdom can only be used to send messages domestically.

Receiving SMS Messages

Phone numbers in the United States and Canada as well as SMS-enabled mobile numbers in the Australia, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK can in most cases receive both domestic and international text messages. However, because it is the responsibility of the sending carrier to deliver the message to our network, we cannot guarantee delivery from all international carriers. We have seen increased issues with SMS messages not reaching Twilio when sent from mobile phones which are roaming internationally.

SMS-enabled phone numbers in Hong Kong, Lithuania, Spain and the UK can only receive SMS messages sent domestically. Messages sent from international phone numbers to these numbers will likely not be received.

Note that Twilio offers two types of SMS-enabled phone numbers in the United Kingdom. Local SMS-enabled phone numbers can only be used domestically within the UK, whereas mobile UK numbers can be used domestically and internationally.
