How does the Twilio Sandbox number work?
If your account was created before July 13, 2012, it is using a shared “Sandbox” number while in trial mode. If you want a unique phone number for your account, which you can keep even after you upgrade, get one here. We encourage you to do this, since using the shared Sandbox number has several restrictions that don’t apply to user Twilio phone numbers normally.
If you’d like to continue using the shared Sandbox number, please be aware that these restrictions apply:
Voice
- When you call your Sandbox number, you will be prompted for your 8-digit PIN before Twilio starts running your app.
- Trial account users must validate a recipient phone number before you can call it to it from the Sandbox number
SMS:
- When you send SMS messages to your Sandbox number, you must enter your PIN as the first part of your message body so Twilio knows which account to send the message to.
- Trial account users must validate a recipient phone number before you can send SMS messages to it from the Sandbox number
To start using your Twilio application without these restrictions, just upgrade your account by adding $20 or more to your account with a valid credit card. After you upgrade, you can purchase phone numbers to use without the restrictions outlined above. Your Sandbox number will still be available in your account, so you can use it with the same restrictions in place.
