We’re obsessed with the security of customer data. I’d bet you are too. One of the most commonly requested features from customers delivering sensitive information via SMS is the ability to redact the message bodies before they’re stored. We’re thrilled to announce Message Body Redaction for Programmable SMS is now available in Developer Preview. With this new feature, developers can take even more control over the privacy of their customers’ data.
Better Communication != Less Security
If you’re using Programmable SMS, there’s a good chance you’re using it to build relationships with your customers. Many developers deliver sensitive information via SMS and would like to reduce the presence of where that data resides. For example in healthcare, complying with security standards to protect patient information is critical and Message Body Redaction can be used to minimize the number of places where the content is stored.
How It Works
Once you get Message Body Redaction enabled for your account, simply specify data handling preferences for the content by setting ContentRetention=discard. When set to discard, Twilio will not store the message body to any sort of long term storage. By default this parameter is set to retain.
Also, you’ll have the ability to activate Message Body Redaction for ALL of your traffic (account level) or any subset of messages that you want (message level).
How to Get in the Developer Preview
Starting today, we’re rolling out Message Body Redaction in Developer Preview and access will be limited during this period. We’re looking for organizations with existing SMS traffic that want to decrease the presence of their data and improve security for that traffic. If that’s you, then fill out this form to request pricing and more info, or contact sales.

We can’t wait to see what you build!
