Upgrading your TwilioQuest NPCs for Alpha 13 Upgrading your TwilioQuest NPCs for Alpha 13

This post will walk you through updating NPCs in an TwilioQuest Alpha 12 extension to work with TwilioQuest Alpha 13. You can use this guide if you are an extension author updating your own extension, or a TwilioQuest player trying to use an extension downloaded from the internet.

TwilioQuest Extensions are a new feature that lets you create your own missions in TwilioQuest. TwilioQuest Extensions are still in alpha, and new features are being added quickly. Sometimes that means breaking changes to the API and tools. Alpha 13 of TwilioQuest 3.2 introduced 12 new ready-to-use NPCs. As a result of this change, NPCs in extensions created for Alpha 12 will have to be updated. This post will walk you through updating NPCs in an Alpha 12 extension so the extension can be played on Alpha 13.

    What changed?

In Alpha 12, NPCs were added to a level by creating a …

Inside a winning TwilioQuest extension Inside a winning TwilioQuest extension

Last week, we released TwilioQuest extensions, a toolkit for you to create your own content and missions with TwilioQuest. What better way to kick the tires on these new tools, than with a retro-game themed hackathon? We challenged the 300 students at Hack-cade to build the best TwilioQuest extension. Although all the submissions were spectacular, one in particular captured our hearts and took the prize. Read on to learn how to create a winning TwilioQuest extension, from La’Kaleigh, creator of bot.NET.

    Sharing the love of C#

TwilioQuest is at its heart an educational game, and whilst you can create all sorts of experiences with your own missions, La’Kaleigh decided to follow the example of existing missions like the Top-secret Javascript Test Lab and Mysteries of the Pythonic Temple by teaching a programming language. La’Kaleigh’s go-to programming language is C#, and so she aimed to create an extension that would …

Unlock your power to teach with TwilioQuest Discover your power to change the world by teaching

We love the way TwilioQuest's 16-bit retro aesthetic and video game experience can make learning tech skills less intimidating for a broad diversity of learners. We are excited to equip everyone in our community with the power to share their knowledge using this fun educational platform!

Getting started as a TwilioQuest game developer is as straightforward as using our open source extension template on GitHub!

    Save and continue

The most effective way to become an expert in a subject is to figure out how to teach it. Portfolio projects, GitHub profiles, and resumes often fail to communicate the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to secure opportunities to advance professionally.

Authoring a new level in TwilioQuest communicates not only your technical understanding, but also a variety of incredibly valuable skills every team wants such as:

    • Breaking down large projects into discrete actionable steps
    • Bringing different disciplines together to create a cohesive …

The TwilioQuest Student Club Grant is available to help student groups learn together with TwilioQuest. Through the grant, student groups holding TwilioQuest workshops can get up to $500 financial support, Twilio swag for their members, and support from local Twilions.

In service of the TwilioQuest mission to help everyone discover their power to change the world with code, the grant will be awarded on a needs-first basis, with priority given to organizations serving underrepresented groups in technology.

    Supporting student group leaders

Student groups are an integral part of the college coding journey. Through these groups and events like hackathons, students get exposure to tools and frameworks that can help them land their first job or bring their dream projects to life.

In thousands of clubs around the world, student group leaders perform the heroic task of creating and presenting workshops for their fellow students. The TwilioQuest Student Club Grant aims …

Explore The Cloud and plant trees in TwilioQuest for Earth Day 2021 Earth Day 2021 _ Blog Header (1).png

Last year, we teamed up with Onetreeplanted.org, our community of streamers, and Operators to plant 10,000 trees for Earth Day! We want to do it all over again this year, but this time we hope to beat last year’s total tree count.

    Play TwilioQuest and plant trees

TwilioQuest is an educational video game that teaches foundational programming skills like Python, JavaScript and open source collaboration. As an Operator, you are on a mission to save The Cloud, a vast virtual world under attack by a shadowy organization known only as the Legacy Systems.

    tree-planting

Throughout April, as you make your way through The Cloud, you will come across several terraforming controls which will plant a virtual tree. This virtual tree will be converted into a real tree, planted by our friends at Onetreeplanted.org.

Download TwilioQuest to get started, and track the tree-planting progress on the tree-counter. Share your progress online using …

How “Operation Univers(ity)” helped students contribute to an Open Source project GitHub Education blog header.png

GitHub Education supports the next generation of software developers. They do this by offering students access to various real-world developer tools from GitHub's partners as well as tips on getting started with open source and fostering communities on campus.

Each year, GitHub hosts their annual customer conference, Universe, in which 50 students normally participate in their Univers(ity) track. As with most conferences in 2020, the GitHub Education team was tasked with bringing that experience online.

The result was a three-day event which took place alongside the core conference content, specifically curated for students. The event took place on Twitch and brought together 30,000 students from every continent to talk about new tools and technologies, careers, and building technical communities.

“In the past, we have had ~50 students attend Universe in person. This year, we were actually able to invite the entire student community which led to around 30,000 students participating …
