VMware adds Twilio's Authy 2FA to Identity Manager platform

Twilio today announced that VMware will offer Authy 2FA for VMware Identity Manager™. Twilio's Authy service enables reliable, scalable authentication that delivers an additional layer of security without compromising user experience. VMware Identity Manager is an identity management solution that delivers on consumer-grade expectations with one-touch access to nearly any app, from any device, optimized with AirWatch adaptive access. Rather than build security from scratch, enterprises like VMware look to Authy for a battle-tested, reliable 2FA service that scales with business and customer needs. VMware will integrate the full capabilities of Twilio's Authy service, an advanced, cloud-delivered authentication service that includes: Authy OneCode for SMS or voice delivery of a One Time Password (OTP); Authy SoftToken, the popular consumer app for time-based generation of OTPs; and Authy OneTouch, a push-style solution that reduces authentication to a single, simple touch to approve or reject requests.

"VMware Identity Manager with Authy 2FA will enable a simple and secure path for users to access their apps quickly and easily," said Marc Boroditsky, Twilio VP of Authentication. "Secure authentication can't be an afterthought for the enterprise, and integrating 2FA offers an additional layer of security to enterprises."

The prominence and success of identity management solutions is fueling the need for scalable, API-first authentication. Enterprises require reliable security that minimizes user friction and operates across an ever-evolving spectrum of devices and platforms.

According to Gartner analysts Anne Elizabeth Robins and Trent Henry, "Authentication is one of the first and crucial steps for information security. Granting users appropriate access rights can only be achieved if users are provably known." (Gartner, "Solution Path: A Guide to Understanding, Designing and Implementing Authentication Solutions," 31 July 2015 G00271001)

"This combination of VMware Identity Manager and Authy 2FA is an example of VMware delivering on its guiding principle of 'consumer simple, enterprise secure' in its solution portfolio," said Ashish Jain, Senior Director, Product Management, End-User Computing, VMware. "As customers look to VMware to help with their business mobility initiatives, delivering a simple and secure digital workspace to end-users enables organizational success."

Authy is a two-factor authentication (2FA) cloud service that addresses the growing need for stronger authentication in an increasingly connected world. Authy's 2FA solutions provide a fast-to-implement, highly scalable and reliable alternative to passwords in the form of one-time SMS codes, the Authy mobile app and the Authy OneTouch API, a push notification authentication solution. Twilio acquired Authy in February of 2015.
