Democratizing communications in government: Meeting people where they are, and helping those who need it most

Code for America builds government digital services that are easy to use and accessible to those often left behind by technical innovation. This talk will describe how CfA is using messaging and voice to make government services more inclusive by meeting people where they are, and better serving those who need it most. Examples of this work include: Balance, a service that lets food stamp recipients check their balance over text message; Connect, a robot that waits on hold with agencies so social service clients and their advocates don't have to; Promptly, friendly text messages for people about to lose their benefits; and CityVoice, making neighborhood feedback easier and more inclusive. This talk will also describe the huge opportunity telephony presents for government and human impact more broadly, and how technologists can get involved and make an impact in their own communities.
