What are North American Area Codes?
Twenty-five North American countries share the +1 country code then divide device numbers using assigned prefix numbers to local numbers. These area codes assist in routing phone calls.
The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) assigns the regional and non-geographic area codes assigned to signatory countries. North American Numbering Plan (NANP) covers the United States, Canada, some Caribbean countries, and all US territories. NANPA calls area codes Number Plan Areas (NPAs).
- The US covers 317 geographic area codes and 18 non-geographic area codes for a total of 335 US area codes.
- Canada covers 40 geographic area codes and two non-geographic area codes for a total of 42 area codes.
- NANPA publishes two reports of the distribution area codes:
- Geographic NPAs (area codes) in service sorted by number
- Non-Geographic NPAs (area codes) in service
- Twilio supports 306 US area codes on the Twilio platform.
