Add and Configure Numbers and Senders
From the Numbers and Senders page in the Twilio Console, you can launch a wizard that guides you through the following tasks:
- Add a number or sender: Buy a number or sender. Numbers and senders are sources from which your customers receive your messages or calls.
- Configure number and sender settings: Complete configuration steps suggested by the wizard based on the number or sender type and your needs. Some configurations are required, while others are optional.
- Complete compliance requirements: Set up an approved compliance profile for your number or sender when necessary. For example, you must complete A2P 10DLC compliance steps and set a primary compliance profile to send messages from US phone numbers.
Use the wizard for end-to-end number and sender addition and configuration in a single, streamlined experience.
From the Numbers and Senders page, you can add the following number and sender types:
- Phone numbers
- Alphanumeric sender IDs
- Short codes
- Rich Communication Services (RCS) senders
- WhatsApp senders (Direct Customers only)
To learn more about these number and sender types, see the Numbers and Senders documentation.
Twilio supports WhatsApp senders for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), but you can't add or configure them from the Numbers and Senders page. To add and configure WhatsApp senders as an ISV, see Register WhatsApp senders- ISVs.
Follow these steps to configure number and sender types. For help choosing a type, see supported number and sender types.
Your personalized experience in the wizard changes based on information you provide and your Twilio account details. Thus, while the following steps describe the general experience, you might see different options than those described.
- In the Twilio Console, navigate to Products & Services and click Numbers and Senders.
- In the Phone Numbers tab, click Set up a new phone number.
- Complete the fields on the Basic information page and click Next.
- Choose and buy a phone number on the Select Number page.
- (Optional) Apply filters to limit results and click Search.
- Click Select next to the number.
- Click Next.
- On the Review and buy number page, review your selection and click Purchase.
- Complete steps under Finish setting up your number, which might include:
- Messaging configuration:
- (US numbers only) Compliance steps for A2P 10DLC, toll-free verification, or Regulatory Compliance. Government regulations require compliance profile and registration approval before you can send messages to recipients in some countries. For tips and examples to complete A2P 10DLC registration, see step 3a in the A2P 10DLC registration application quickstart. You can also finish this configuration later on the Numbers and Senders page.
- Messaging Service setup to simplify high-volume message sending. Twilio requires a Messaging Service for phone numbers subject to A2P 10DLC. To use some features, such as Sticky Sender and Geomatch, you must set up a Messaging Service.
- Voice configuration:
- Availability of the following features varies by country, check the linked documentation for details.
- SHAKEN/STIR registration to help boost your call answer rates.
- Voice Integrity registration to ensure your numbers aren't mislabeled as spam.
- Branded Calling registration to brand your outbound calls with your business name, call reason, and logo.
- CNAM registration to help boost your call pickup rates by displaying your business name on the recipient's caller ID.
After you add and configure a number or sender and get required government and carrier approvals, you can use it to send messages or make calls.
Some numbers, such as Toll-Free and A2P numbers, require approval before use. You can check their approval status in the Numbers and Senders page in the Console. Other number and sender types appear under the tab for its type after completing any required compliance steps.
