Businesses thrive when consistently interacting with customers and clients, but not all of the exchanges are via email. Some occur on external platforms, while others are on mobile SMS or MMS. There are numerous inbound and outbound inquiries, responses, and other types of messages that flood inboxes every day, making it easy for anyone to accidentally delete an important text message. Learn how to restore deleted text messages on an iPhone or Android.
Data loss can severely hinder operation and communication between businesses and consumers. It’s important to be prepared for the worst so that when it does happen, your business doesn’t incur costs or lose time—and will be able to facilitate stress-free, secure conversations.
The following are some useful tips on how to recover deleted text messages.
How to restore deleted text messages on iPhone
Most current iPhone models back up SMS messages on iCloud, Apple’s storage and computing service. It’s highly recommended that you manually check if your iCloud account is active and if it has sufficient storage capacity for your business photos, messages, and contacts.
If your iCloud account is properly enabled, retrieving your lost SMS messages will be significantly easier. First, you need to check if there’s an available backup that might contain your deleted SMS.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name, where it also displays with a smaller font: “Apple ID, iCloud, and Media & Purchases.”
- Click “iCloud,” then “Manage Storage.”
- Go into Backups, where you can access and review your saved data.
Assuming that you have a backup, you will then reset your phone with the following steps.
- Go back to Settings.
- Go to General.
- Hit “Reset.”
- Select “Erase All Content and Settings,” then “Erase Now.”
After the reset, choose to restore your data from your iCloud backup. Once completed, you can view your previously deleted messages.
Using Finder on Mac
If you don’t have an iCloud backup but have a Mac on hand, you may still be able to restore your deleted messages.
- Using a USB or USB-C cable, connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Launch Finder, then select “My iPhone.”
- Click “Restore,” and your computer should then sync with your phone.
How to restore deleted text messages from your Android
When you delete a text message on an Android, your phone doesn’t automatically remove the message. Your phone deems the file as “inactive” and signals that new messages can overwrite its information. Therefore, the first step to take is to set your phone on airplane mode. That way, there’ll be no incoming messages that can permanently overwrite the ones you’re trying to retrieve.
Google Drive backup
- In your web browser, log into your Google Drive account to gain access to any available backup data.
- Click on the Menu option, then Settings.
- Select “Google Backup.”
- Locate your device—but only if you’ve chosen to back it up beforehand.
- Click “SMS Text Messages” and search for the exact time stamp of the previous backup. This only applies to text messages sent before the most recent backup.
- Reset your phone and select the Google Drive backup.
Note that this option is only viable if your device has been using Google Drive to back up your data.
Data Recovery Software
If the worse comes to worst, there are data recovery tools available for either purchase or free trial. After putting your Android device on airplane mode, you may need to grant access into your files so that your chosen software can run a scan. If it can identify the messages that you deleted, it will also be able to restore them back into your device.
This option poses its share of risks if you’re not familiar with data recovery software. Therefore, research extensively before making a decision.
