We’ve kicked off SIGNAL with a bang and are excited to welcome over 3,000 people to our customer and developer conference at Bill Graham Civic Center in the heart of San Francisco.

We’ve had a big day, and for those of you who weren’t able to make it, or if you were overwhelmed by everything you heard today, here’s a quick recap of our Day 1 Keynote.

The Great Communications Renaissance

Our CEO, Jeff Lawson, kicked off the day reminding us there’s never been a more exciting time for communications because it’s transforming every aspect of human life. We are in the midst of a Great Communications Renaissance which is powered by technology and the disruptors that are building it.

“APIs democratize. They give life to ideas. They liberate the freedom to create.”

Jeff also stressed that the future doesn’t belong to a single company or to a single carrier, but to everyone: developers who see the world how it could be and start building that future. And to power the future of communication, we need to reflect the world we are serving. At Twilio, we’ve made the commitment to have a 50% female workforce globally, and in the US, have 30% underrepresented populations make up our workforce by 2023.

In addition to our company-wide commitment, we’ve created two ways to help create a new generation of developers:

1- Hatch -  A 6-month software engineering apprenticeship program for underrepresented persons which ensures apprentices have the resources and on-the-job experience they need to grow their careers — without compromising their identity or rounding down their personalities to an expected norm.

2 - Twilio Quest - We don’t believe that learning complex ideas like how to use APIs has to be boring. Students learn faster when they are having fun. That's why we created TwilioQuest, an easy and fun way for people to learn how to use Twilio. We hope to see millions of XP translate into thousands of real world solutions.

Transoforming the Customer Experience

We heard from many of our customers who are transforming customer experience in industries from e-commerce to pizza delivery.

Domino’s shared how they’ve undergone a true communications renaissance and reinvented the way we order pizza—through apps, Alexa integrations, and more.

Deliveroo, one of the world’s leading food delivery services active in 12 countries, talked about reaching their customers through popular global channels like WhatsApp for a true omnichannel experience.

1-800-Flowers.com has reimagined communication at scale by providing Twilio-powered contextual notifications with every order—helping its customers know the status of their gift at every stage of the gifting journey.

Which leads us to some exciting new product announcements to help our customers power the future of communication:
