How to Enable Fortnite 2FA

What is Fortnite 2FA?

Fortnite is a massively successful third-person online battle royale-style game that has taken the world by storm. Having blasted onto the scene in 2017, Fortnite has since become a worldwide phenomenon. In fact, Fortnite has a daily login of over 3–4 million players. While that’s still a huge number, it has steeply come down from the 22.5 million average in 2020.

This massive number of users presents numerous malicious opportunities to an array of bad actors. Just think of all the data that Epic Games, Fortite’s parent company, collects on its users and how it is an attractive target to hackers big and small: usernames, passwords, payment details, etc.

And sometimes passwords just aren’t enough. Even with the best efforts, passwords are vulnerable due to poor encryption, hacked databases, or a lucky social engineering attack. Once a bad actor gets this, the Epic Games account is now compromised. There is a solution: two-factor authentication or 2FA.

2FA is a security best practice that provides an extra layer of security on top of your password. Companies like Epic Games accomplish this by requiring a combination of any of the following forms of identification before allowing access to an account:

  1. Something you know: password, pin, etc.
  2. Something you have: phone, fob, or 2FA app, etc.
  3. Something you are: biometrics, phone number, etc.

The benefits of Fortnite 2FA

There are many benefits to securing your account with 2FA as it is one of the simplest ways to protect a compromised account. So even if someone steals, guesses or uses brute force to obtain your password, they'd still need the second factor to gain access.

Epic Games itself highly recommends enabling 2FA for the following reasons:

  • Security: 2FA increases the security of your account. So even if somebody guesses your password, they won’t be able to access your account.
  • Free games: 2FA is required to claim some free games in the Epic Games Store.
  • Gifting: 2FA is required to send gifts in Fortnite.
  • Competing in Fortnite: 2FA is required for participation in Fortnite competitive events such as the Fortnite World Cup!

In addition to those reasons, Epic Games also gives players rewards for enabling 2FA. You can check them out here.
