Twilio Changelog | Jun. 26, 2025

We’re adding business registration numbers to Toll-Free verification

Starting September 30, 2025, customers will have the option to add Business Registration Numbers (BRNs), like Employer Identification Numbers (EINs), when they set up new Toll-Free verifications.

This update helps Twilio keep messaging safe, trusted, and reliable for everyone. For now, adding a BRN to new Toll-Free verifications is optional, but we’re giving early notice so you (and your customers) can get a head start on gathering the right info. By January 2026, a BRN will be required for all new Toll-Free verifications, so it’s a good idea to start preparing now

If you ever run into trouble submitting your Toll-Free Verification with a BRN, we’ve got your back. Check out our New Policy API Onboarding documentation to help you with error code details and step-by-step guidance to make fixes as painless as possible.

What’s changing?

We’re introducing three new fields to the Toll-Free Verification submission process:

  • Business Registration Number (BRN)

  • Business Registration Type

  • Issuing Country of Business Registration

These fields will become mandatory as part of the business verification process for Toll-Free Messaging.

Policy details by region

US-Based Organizations

  • If your business is registered in the US, you’ll need to provide a valid EIN as your BRN. This EIN should match the legal business name you list during verification.

  • If you don’t have an EIN (for example, if you’re a sole proprietor with no employees), you can indicate that it’s not available. However, this exception is only for organizations truly without EINs.

Organizations Outside the US

  • Businesses registered outside the US will need to supply their official business registration number as issued by your local or national business authority, plus the country of registration.

  • Acceptable formats and documentation will vary depending on your location, but must clearly show:

    • Your legal business name

    • A valid business registration number

    • The name of the issuing authority (e.g., Companies House in the UK, Corporations Canada, etc.)

What should customers do next?

Customers should start collecting their BRNs now. If you’re acting on behalf of your customers, be sure to get their BRNs and supporting details ready for submission.

Keep an eye out for more updates! When we have dates to share, we’ll email customers. For guidance, check out our Toll-Free Verification Policy for Collecting BRNs article
