Toutapp is an email client designed to make the everyday process of – you guessed it – emailing more efficient.  Toutapp achieves this task using templates, tracking, scheduled delivery, and CRM updates as well as making email easily accesible through a bookmarklet, mobile web application, and SMS.  Founder and CEO, Tawheed Kader, created the original program for himself, but found it to be in high demand within his company.  After further development, Toutapp won AppSumo’s Lean Startup Challenge in March 2011 and joined the 500 Startups family.

Toutapp uses Twilio to send SMS.  When you are out-and-about, you can quickly send e-mails via SMS.  Toutapp recently incorporated an iPhone app and they are always working on new features.

How did Toutapp get started?

Toutapp started as a weekend project. I was trying to spread the word on a different idea I was working on and just needed a tool to send emails faster to people.

Our goal is to evolve email so people can communicate better and more productively. We want to do this by becoming the the defacto email client for businesses in the next 5 years.

We use a combination of Rails, Redis, Javascript frameworks, and pretty much whatever tool we can find to do the job right. We’re a bunch of brand-agnostic hackers over here.

How did you get started developing with Twilio?

I created a mini-GroupMe before GroupMe. After that, I was hooked.

You’re one of the first companies that thought about the UX around an API. It shows. It is a pleasure to work with. Also, being someone that was in telecom before and having worked with telecom contracts, provisioning T1s, and negotiating rates. I’m so glad Twilio exists today.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Tawheed! If you want to learn more about Tout, visit their website or send them a tweet @toutapp. Good luck with Tout and we look forward to watching it evolve!
