Systems of Agency and Engineering Grit: What You Missed at SIGNAL San Francisco 2026
Time to read:
The future didn't just arrive; it was built
SIGNAL San Francisco 2026 was a two-day masterclass in the "invisible extraordinary". We moved past the noise of AI hype and into the reality of AI execution. The takeaway for the thousands of builders who joined us was clear: Experiences are built, not bought.
Technology, at its best, solves real problems and reshapes our sense of what the world can be. If you weren't in the room or tuning into the livestream to see the magic happen, here is your blueprint for the next wave of innovation.
1. The Vision Keynote: Where wonder met the roadmap
The event opened with a high-velocity look at the "One Twilio" future with Twilio leadership. CEO Khozema Shipchandler, Inbal Shani (CPO), Chris Koehler (CMO), and Erin Reilly (Chief Social Impact Officer) proved that behind every awe-inspiring experience is a builder who made it intentional.
The highlight? Seeing our partnership with PGA of America (represented by Kevin Scott) come to life alongside customer spotlights from Nestlé (Anna Rosas Bresca), Centerfield (Aniketh Parmar) , Sierra (Bret Taylor), and Rivian (Sev Andrieu-Delile). We didn't just show demos; we showcased the new primitives of innovation – RCS , Conversation Relay, and Conversational AI. The data backs up the vision: Kho highlighted Forrester's findings that maximizing the Twilio platform drives serious results, including a 190% ROI and $12.5M NPV, with the entire investment paying for itself in less than 6 months.
2. The rise of "systems of agency"
The most significant shift in enterprise software was defined on the SIGNAL stage by Sierra Co-founder Bret Taylor and Twilio CEO Khozema Shipchandler.
We are officially exiting the era of static "systems of record." The future belongs to systems of agency – sophisticated, goal-oriented AI that can reason, remember, and take action on behalf of your customers. For the visionaries in the room, the message was direct: if your 2026 strategy is still built on reactive, scripted chatbots, you are leaving customer loyalty on the table.
3. Engineering grit: From the Mars Rover to the glitter bomb
Mark Rober – NASA engineer-turned-YouTube-innovator – brought a necessary dose of "NASA-level" rigor to the builder community.
Rober reminded us that the principles of wonder remain the same: curiosity, failure, and unrelenting grit. He challenged the room to build better by borrowing patterns, absorbing taste, and extending ideas rather than starting from scratch.
4. The "one Twilio" reality: Data meets delivery
We moved from theory to practice to show how a unified platform actually works. By unifying Twilio Segment data with our communication channels, we demonstrated event-triggered journeys that feel human, not robotic.
The "dang" moment: A live demo showing a high-value cart abandonment triggering a personalized WhatsApp message with a unique discount, followed by an immediate, prioritized connection to a live agent. This is intelligence with context.
5. Building for real-world impact
At Twilio, we believe the tools used to power global enterprises should also solve the world’s most pressing challenges. Keisha Browder ( United Way Bay Area ) joined Erin Reilly to show how Twilio is helping provide valuable career, financial, and educational resources to families in San Francisco. It was a powerful reminder that "building wonder" isn't just a slogan – it’s a responsibility.
6. TwilioWorld came to life
The Operator Challenge at SIGNAL was a builder’s success, transforming SIGNAL into a scavenger hunt. This physical, puzzle-based experience, centered around The Monolith, challenged attendees to navigate the venue like elite operatives, solving high-stakes missions that showcased the full Twilio product suite.
