New Toll-Free Verification Policy for Collecting Business Registration Number

June 25, 2025

At Twilio, we’re always looking for ways to make your communications more secure, reliable, and well… just plain better. So here’s some news hot off the press: starting September 30, 2025, we’re making a small tweak to the Toll-Free verification process that packs a big punch.

What’s new on the Toll-Free verification block

Starting September 30, we’ll begin collecting Business Registration Numbers (BRNs), like Employer Identification Numbers (EINs), whenever you set up a new Toll-Free verification. While it’s optional for now, we’re getting this out there early so you have plenty of time to gather what you need and stay ahead of the curve.

By early 2026, providing a BRN will no longer be optional—it’ll be required for all new Toll-Free verifications. But don’t worry: if your business doesn’t have a BRN, we’ll have a solution in place. You won’t be blocked or removed from service. This isn’t just us making extra work for you; it’s part of a bigger industry-wide push to keep telecom services safe, trusted, and working for everyone.

Why It’s Important

Let’s face it, the telecom world moves fast. With that speed comes a shared responsibility to keep bad actors out and make sure your legitimate traffic flows without a hitch. BRNs are an essential line of defense, helping protect your business, prevent fraud, and strengthen the entire communications ecosystem.

By jumping on this early, you’re not just ticking a box—you’re helping ensure your traffic is trusted and secure, while making life easier for yourself (and everyone else) down the line.

Mark your calendar: secure your compliance before it’s required

Now’s the time to start gathering your Employer Identification Numbers or your customers’ BRNs if you’re submitting on their behalf. Acting now will make things much smoother when these requirements officially become the standard.

Here’s a quick timeline to keep in mind:

  • September 30, 2025: Start including a BRN with your new Toll-Free verification submissions (optional at first, but encouraged!).

  • Early 2026: Providing a BRN will become mandatory for all new Toll-Free verifications.

We know changes like this can feel like one more thing to juggle. But by getting ahead of it now, you’re setting yourself—and your communications—up for success. Plus, you’ll be helping to keep the entire telecom ecosystem secure, trusted, and reliable.

So stay tuned for more updates. And if you’ve got questions? We’re always here to help.
