Twilio Video Virtual Background on Mobile SDKs is now Generally Available

Virtual Background support on the Video iOS SDK and the Video Android SDK is now generally available. The virtual background functionality is provided via optional plugin libraries for these native SDKs. When the plugin is included in a mobile application it can process the video camera feed and perform either background blur or background replacement. There is no additional charge for this feature.

Virtual background on mobile video apps enables end users to look professional while on the go and ensures that any background clutter does not distract from the conversation.

To start using virtual backgrounds on your mobile application review the detailed setup instructions in our developer documentation and upgrade your Video iOS and Video Android SDK to the latest versions. The changelog file for the Video iOS SDK is here and the one for the Video Android SDK is here.

Twilio Video Will Remain a Standalone Product

We previously announced in March 2024 that Twilio was going to End of Life (EOL) Twilio Video on December 5, 2026. After considering your feedback and our commitment to delivering personalized engagement, we’ve reversed our earlier decision to retire Twilio Video in 2026. Twilio Video will remain a standalone product as part of our customer engagement platform.

Twilio Video will continue to play a key role in helping businesses provide trusted and personalized experiences. We’re also investing in enhancements to integrations with other Twilio channels, such as Voice, Messaging, and Twilio Flex, and new features to provide more actionable data-driven insights.

Current Twilio Video customers can continue to use Video as they always have; there’s no action or change needed. New Twilio Video customers can get started by reviewing our Video developer docs

Improved accuracy for Twilio TURN Server usage

The Twilio STUN-TURN service, also known as the Network Traversal Service, charges according to the megabytes relayed by the Twilio TURN servers. This release introduces a more accurate approach for measuring the relayed megabytes of a TURN session. For additional details on how we calculate relayed megabytes, see our FAQ page here

In addition, effective 1 October 2024, the legacy volume based discounting model for pay-as-you-go Twilio STUN-TURN customers is being retired. There is no change to the list prices, which are documented here. Customers who have not already done so should reach out to their Twilio Account Executive or contact our sales team here to discuss available discounts. With this change we are providing increased transparency into how we charge for the Twilio STUN-TURN service.
